Emerson Research (Summer 2004)
In the summer of 2004, I collaborated with Hamilton Professor of History Robert Paquette, to transcribe and collect background information on a series of letters written by Mary Lamboll Thomas Beach from Charleston, SC in the 1820s. I spent most of the summer working from high resolution scans of microfiche and took the last week in Charleston working from the original letters (which I found far easier and should have done sooner, in retrospect) and doing research with the South Carolina Historical Society staff. This project taxed the limits of my concentration and patience, but allowed me to find a new appreciation for historical research.
